Directions and Parking

Registration

In Wellhill Car Park.  Once you have cycled from Craigfield Farm confirm you have arrived and collect any dibber before following the signs/ tape to the start.  We know you will be tempted to park in Wellhill but we have been specifically asked by Forestry and Land Scotland not to do so and therefore we have arranged parking as detailed below.  We rely on the good will of Forestry and Land Scotland for the use of Culbin and other local forests therefore we hope you will understand why we are asking you not to use Wellhill Car Park in this instance.

Parking

We have been asked not to park in the Wellhill Carpark  (NH997613) so as we are venturing into the east of Culbin we have suggested you make this a cycling adventure by using the parking kindly agreed at in the yard at Craigfield Farm, Kintessack IV36 2SP.  It is located approximately 1km south of the turnoff to Wellhill on the road between Broom of May and Kintessack and it will be signed from the road using an orienteering kite. (approx 2km to Wellhill Car Park)

You have been asked not to block the shed doors as access will be required and to park on the concrete pad.  A volunteer will help with parking.  There will be cyclists on the access road please be patient and careful.  If you do not have a bike or have young children please contact the organiser to discuss alternative parking arrangements.

Toilets located in Wellhill Car Park.

Start and Finish

Start and Finish are adjacent to each other and are located approximately 2km from Wellhill Car Park.  There is room to park your bikes and planner has indicated the starts are approximately 10 minute cycle or a 20 minute walk from Wellhill Car Park at junction 9 on the Culbin map.

A map will be provided in the final details.

Terrain

Culbin was planted between the wars to stabalise shifting sand dunes; the resulting open pine forest on complex topography is perfect for orienteering.  The forest is lovely and runnable with good visibility.  A mix of control sites, some probably well known and some hopefully new.

Ticks and Covid

Ticks

  • Risk Awareness:   Please be aware that ticks are common across many of the areas we run in and can carry infections such as Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis.  Ticks are active in the UK primarily from March to October, but year-round vigilance is recommended.

  • Prevention Strategies:

  • Wearing full leg and abdomen cover in the forest.

  • Applying insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.

  • Checking yourself for ticks after your run.  Common areas for ticks include behind the knees, underarms, hairline, and any pressure points.

  • Considering vaccination against TBE, if visiting high-risk areas in Europe or Asia.

  • Tick Removal and Symptoms:   Consider using a tick removal tool to ensure the tick is removed quickly and completely.   If a tick has attached, it should be removed as soon as possible.
  • Health Action:  If symptoms develop, such as a rash or flu-like symptoms, individuals should seek medical advice promptly and mention the tick bite, as not all doctors may be familiar with the conditions.
  • Key Resources:

  • Government Leaflet:  Linked here

  • International Orienteering Federation (IOF):   Provides information and fact sheets on TBE in collaboration with health partners orienteering.sport/tick-borne-encephalitis-tbe-dont-run-the-risk/.

  • NHS:  See nhs.uk for health advice on tick bites and associated conditions like Lyme disease.
