Lossie Forest East

Event Summary

Welcome to our first Saturday League event of 2024 - but on a Sunday!  With the kind permission of Forestry Land Scotland and adjoining landowner, Mr Ed Tenant, this event will be held on the East of Lossie Forest.  There will be four courses on offer to make use of this fantastic area - which was last used at Moray 2023 (Scottish 6 Days).

Parking, Registration and Download will be in a field via the sandy track past Speyslaw farm (w3w:///truffles.rephrase.submits).  Please note that this access track is about 1 km in length and has pot holes, so please drive slowly along it.  The landowner has not charged Moravian for use of his land, but has requested a donation to his charity of choice.  As such, there will be a £2 parking charge per vehicle, collected at the field entrance.  Please have your change ready.

The route to the start, and back from the finish, will be marked from the parking area - diagonally across the field to the edge of Lossie Forest.  Tapes will mark the route into the forest.  The start is approximately 1 km and the finish approximately 1.2 km from the parking area.

Ticks and Covid

Ticks

  • Risk Awareness:   Please be aware that ticks are common across many of the areas we run in and can carry infections such as Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis.  Ticks are active in the UK primarily from March to October, but year-round vigilance is recommended.

  • Prevention Strategies:

  • Wearing full leg and abdomen cover in the forest.

  • Applying insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.

  • Checking yourself for ticks after your run.  Common areas for ticks include behind the knees, underarms, hairline, and any pressure points.

  • Considering vaccination against TBE, if visiting high-risk areas in Europe or Asia.

  • Tick Removal and Symptoms:   Consider using a tick removal tool to ensure the tick is removed quickly and completely.   If a tick has attached, it should be removed as soon as possible.
  • Health Action:  If symptoms develop, such as a rash or flu-like symptoms, individuals should seek medical advice promptly and mention the tick bite, as not all doctors may be familiar with the conditions.
  • Key Resources:

  • Government Leaflet:  Linked here

  • International Orienteering Federation (IOF):   Provides information and fact sheets on TBE in collaboration with health partners orienteering.sport/tick-borne-encephalitis-tbe-dont-run-the-risk/.

  • NHS:  See nhs.uk for health advice on tick bites and associated conditions like Lyme disease.
