Event Summary

Moravian Orienteers welcome you to the iconic Culbin Forest for our latest Saturday Local.  This event will be held in Culbin West, which was last used as part of last year's Scottish 6 Days.  

Special thanks go to Forestry Land Scotland for granting permission and to the owners of Snab of Moy Farm.  Parking will be at the Snab of Moy Farm, with cars in the dressage arena and larger vehicles in the hard standing yard area.  There will be a £2 charge per vehicle, so please bring change with you on the day.  Event registration will be in the machine/grain shed. 

Litter - All competitors are asked to take their litter home with them.

Dogs are welcome (on leads on the course).

Directions and Parking

Directions and Parking.   From the East, please take the right turn off the A96 immediately after the Findhorn Bridge (west of Forres) and then immediately right towards Culbin.  Continue through Mains of Moy, past the sharp 135 degree bend immediately before Earnhill Farm, and into Kintessack village.  At the bus shelter in Kintessack, turn right into the village and then left after approximately 500 m.  Follow this road until the Snab of Moy Farm (large farm buildings) on your left (w3w://////bumpy.comfort.quail).  Parking will be in the dressage arena for cars and the hard standing yard area for larger vehicles.  Marshalls will direct you to a parking space.  There will be a £2 charge.

From the West, please take the left turn off the A96 at Brodie immediately after the Brodie Country Fare.  Continue over the zebra crossing and straight to the end of the road until a T-junction.  Turn right at the T-junction and continue for approximately 3 km, through Cloddymoss and Snab of Moy, and into Kintessach village.  Then follow the directions above. 

Registration.  Registration will be at the Snab of Moy Farm in the machine/grain shed.  At Registration, there will be:

  • Hired dibbers ready for collection.
  • Maps for participants on the yellow course – please make sure you collect your yellow course map before going to the Start.
  • Limited entry on the day.

Start and Finish

Start is located approximately 1km from assembly along a farm track and then along a forest track.  The finish is located approximately 300m from assembly and the route to the start passes the finish control.

Terrain

Culbin was planted between the wars to stabilise shifting sand dunes; the resulting open pine forest on complex topography is perfect for orienteering. The forest is mainly runnable with good visibility though some pockets of gorse and deeper heather do exist. There is very little bracken, or water, and no rock. Hills are not high, but can have short steep faces. Some rides are reasonably clear to follow, but easy to miss on crossing. Some are revealed by having more ground vegetation, so it can be faster to run through the forest beside them.

The area also has a number of extraction lanes, but these are well mapped.

 

Scale will be 1:10,000 with 2.5m Contours.

Entries are online via SI Entries. 

  • Online entries open until 23:59 hours on Wednesday 19 June at normal prices.
  • Late online entries and Limited EOD until 11:30 am on the day subject to an additional £1 and subject to map availability.  Entries can also be edited/changed/cancelled until this closure again subject to map availability.

Final Details

Safety Information

  • Other Forest Users - Please respect other users of the Forest (dog walkers, dogs, horse riders, horses and cyclists).
  • Log stacks – As tempting as it may be, they must not be climbed on as they could fall and injure you or someone else.
  • Trip Hazards - Please note that Culbin has potential trip hazards, including tree roots, stony and broken ground and litter.
  • Ticks - Culbin Forest has ticks.  Though they may not be too active at this time of year, please check yourself for ticks and remove them ideally within 48 hours of the event.
  • Weather.  Participants will be advised by a sign at the start and at registration, as required.
  • Dis-orientation.  Participants are advised that the safety bearing is to head due south until they meet a main forest track or exit the forest.
