Event Summary

With kind permission of Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) and Moray Council, welcome to this year's Scottish Relay Championships, which will be held in the north of the iconic Roseisle Forest.  The area was last used as part of the Scottish 6 Days, Moray 2023, whilst the Scottish Relays were held in the same location in 2018.  The routegadget for both events are linked here: 2023-08-01 Roseisle (routegadget.co.uk); 2018-05-27 Scottish Relay Championships - Roseisle N (routegadget.co.uk).

Roseisle Forest offers a fabulous place to orienteer with intricate contour features and a good path network, all on a coastal dune covered in pine trees.  In order to keep the forest healthy, FLS has asked participants be aware of biosecurity.  They advise that tree diseases and pests are posing an increasing threat to our forests and can be spread very quickly from forest to forest on muddy tyres, boots or paws.  To minimise the spread of tree diseases and pests, FLS have highlighted some simple ways that everyone can follow to help.  Moravian supports these ways and we encourage all orienteers to be aware and follow them.  The following link has the details: https://forestryandland.gov.scot/keep-it-clean?highlight=keep%20it%20clean.

Directions and Parking

Directions.

From Elgin: Turn off the A96 onto the B9013 to Burghead.  At College of Roseisle continue straight on and into Burghead.

Car Parking.

Burghead has plenty of places where cars can be parked and all within a relatively short distance of assembly at the Burghead playing field (w3w:///circle.apart.episode).  There is parking on the harbourside (less than a maximum of 15 mins walk from assembly) and on nearby streets.  All vehicles must approach the parking via B9013 and Church Road; the route will be clearly signed and marshalled.  Please do not park on the main B9013 road that runs through Burghead to minimise disruption to local traffic.  Please follow the route in final details to return to assembly.  This will return you outside of the competition area.

Toilets.

Toilets will be located on the Burghead playing field.  The nearest public toilets are located at the Harbourside in Burghead (w3w:///repeats.shady.craftsman).

Dogs.

Dogs are permitted and must be on leads at all times.  Please clear up any mess.

Courses

Terrain

Roseisle Forest is a planned forest consisting of mostly open pine forest with some denser areas.  Planted on coastal sand dunes which provide some complex topography with the sea bordering the north west of the area. There is a good network of forest roads and many smaller paths.

Recent forestry work during the winter has resulted in areas of brashings and log piles.  The courses have been designed to avoid the majority of these areas.

1:7500, 2.5m contours. All courses will be on A3.

Safety Information

  • Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.
  • Other Forest Users.  Please respect other users of the Forest (dog walkers, dogs, horse riders, horses and cyclists).
  • Log stacks.  Recent forest work has resulted in log stacks.  As tempting as it may be, they must not be climbed on as they could fall and injure you or someone else.
  • Disused Railway Line.  Participants are advised that the area is bisected by the disused Alves-Burghead railway line, which is crossed (twice) by all courses.  Please note that you may cross at any point, noting that the line runs through a deep cutting in places, and is flanked on both sides by fences in variable states of disrepair.  Please beware of loose strands of wire.
  • Trip Hazards.  Please note that Roseisle has potential trip hazards, including tree roots, stony and broken ground, and fence wires bordering the sides of the disused Alves-Burghead railway line.
  • Ticks.  Roseisle Forest has ticks.  Please check yourself for ticks and remove them ideally within 48 hours of the event.
  • Weather.  Participants are advised that a waterproof may be made compulsory if inclement weather.  Participants will be advised by a sign at assembly, as required.
  • Dis-orientation.  Participants are advised that the safety bearing is to head due north until the sea, a main forest track or a disused railway line is met.
  • Water Hazard.  Participants on Course A will cross a stream, which can be deep and sludgy.  It is not recommended to cross other than via the bridge or beach.
