Event Summary

Welcome to event #3 of this year's Northern Urban League, kindly sponsored by YourOMaps.  This event will use a new map from the Scottish 6 Days, Moray 2023, and will be held in some of the same areas used for the sprint final at the 2015 World Orienteering Championships.  It promises to be fast and furious!

Two courses (long and short) have been planned which encounter estate roads that could be busy with other road users.  All competitors must check for traffic and other road users before crossing them.  Juniors under the age of 16 on the day of the event must be accompanied (rather than merely shadowed) by a responsible adult.  That adult will be responsible for their junior's safety.

This year's Series has five events, organised by BASOC, INVOC and MOR.  The event dates and locations are as follows:

  • Event #1 - Grantown - Wednesday 29 May 2024 - BASOC.
  • Event #2 - Milton & Drakies - Friday 07 June 2024 - INVOC.
  • Event #3 - Forres - Wednesday 19 June 2024 - MOR.
  • Event #4 - Elgin - Wednesday 3 July 2024 - MOR.
  • Event #5 - Lochardil - Friday 23 August 2024 - INVOC.

The Northern Orienteering Urban League standings after the first two events are linked here: invoc.org.uk/results/2024/NUL_League.htm.

Courses

Two Courses:

  • Long - 4.7 Km, 20 Controls
  • Short - 2.4 Km, 13 Controls.

Course lengths are straight line.  The optimum route is likely to be up to 50% more.  Both courses have negligible amounts of climb.  SI AIr will be enabled.  Loose control descriptions will be available.

The long course will encounter some woodland, with path options available.  Shorts are permitted.  If the weather leading up to the event has been very wet, shoes with grip are recommended.  There are various road crossings - some of which are busy.  Please be observant of traffic and other road users and cross any roads with care.  The main Forres to Grantown road (A940) is strictly out of bounds.

At most control sites, the SI unit along with a flag will be attached securely to an object, such as a lamp-post or fence.

Participants must report to download by 2000 hours, even if they retire.

Points awarded for each race and prizes after the final fifth event of the Series.

Terrain

Forres is a beautiful town and regularly features amongst the Scotland in Bloom prize-winners; it boasts some intricate alleyways between older buildings and some newer estate housing with park and woodland areas.

1:4000m, with 2.5m contours.
