Kinloss Barracks

Event Summary

Welcome to a special bonus event!  To coincide with event #4 of the Scottish Orienteering Urban League at Dufftown on 25 May 2025, Moravian is delighted to offer an indoor event at Kinloss Barracks.  With special thanks to CO 39 Regt and his staff, the event will be held in the ex-MRA4 simulator building on the base.

This event offers a unique chance to try orienteering indoors.  The map will show a plan of the building.  There is a ground floor, first floor and between the two floors a small mezzanine level.  The event will take place inside the building and will require you to complete the course outlined on the map by resolving and executing a 3D orienteering puzzle.  Timing is by Si (air enabled).

Steve Smirthwaite has planned four courses to test your abilities to orienteer indoors.  These are as follows:

  • Easy.  The Easy course is suitable for juniors and those not wanting too difficult a challenge.
  • Moderate.  The Moderate course will be challenging, but not as long or as difficult as the Hard courses.
  • Short Hard.  The Hard courses will be a real brainteaser and will take your best puzzle solving skills to complete.  The Short Hard is expected to be won in about 30 minutes, but will take some competitors up to an hour.
  • Long Hard.  The Long Hard has an expected winning time of 45 minutes, but many competitors will take well over an hour.  You can enter the Long Hard and finish half way around to count for the Short Hard.

The competition area will have barriers, mazes and one-way systems.  There are many interlinking rooms, corridors and numerous staircases.  In three large halls, there are mazes or other features, set out to challenge your map reading skills.

Please bring photo ID (passport, driver's licence or young scot card are ideal) with you to gain you access to the Base.  Sorry, no photo ID, no access!  Please note that Juniors at Primary School and accompanied by an adult do not need photo ID.  Given security requirements, you must pre-enter.  There will be no entry on the day, except for military and Barrack staff.

So, come and make a weekend of orienteering in Moray - entering the indoor and SOUL events.
