Event Summary

Welcome to our next counting event of the 2026 Moravian local league.  This time, we will be orienteering in the northern part of the iconic Roseisle Forest.  The area was last used for an orienteering event at Moray 2023 (Scottish 6 Days).  The event routegadget is attached here: 2023-08-01 Roseisle.

Roseisle Forest offers a fabulous place to orienteer with intricate contour features and a good path network, all on a coastal dune covered in pine trees.  In order to keep the forest healthy, Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has asked participants be aware of biosecurity.  They advise that tree diseases and pests are posing an increasing threat to our forests and can be spread very quickly from forest to forest on muddy tyres, boots or paws.  To minimise the spread of tree diseases and pests, FLS have highlighted some simple ways that everyone can follow to help.  Moravian supports these ways and we encourage all orienteers to be aware and follow them.  The following link has the details: https://forestryandland.gov.scot/keep-it-clean?highlight=keep%20it%20clean.

Please note that courses close at 1.30 pm.  You must report to download by this time, even if you retire and do not complete the course.

Planner's Comments

There are new areas of recent thinning and, therefore, new extraction tracks with an unfortunate amount of brash. This will be encountered on both orange and light green courses. Both of these courses also cross the old railway line.  There are obvious routes to do this at points where there are paths.

Competitors are advised that there are several new informal trails through the area which are not mapped. Where these are encountered on the yellow course, there will be smiley faces to help with navigation.

For the light green course, there are electricity pylons in an obvious cleared area. The pylons and wires are not mapped.

1:7500, 5m contours.

Safety Information

  • Competitors.  Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety at all times. All participants are to wear suitable footwear and full leg cover.
  • Other People/Activities.  Competitors must be aware of members of the public and other competitors on the courses and take care to avoid collisions.
  • Terrain Hazards.  Participants are advised that they will encounter brash, tree stumps and tree roots on the courses due to felling.
  • Road Hazard.  Please note that the B9013 road is strictly out of bounds and the map has been annotated accordingly.  This is the road that comes from Roseisle and into Burghead.  'Caution runner' signs have been placed to warn road users of participants.
  • Log Hazards.  All courses may encounter log piles due to felling.  These must not be climbed. There is one small log pile by a path at the end of the yellow and orange courses.  This will be taped as Out of Bounds.  All runners must run around it.
  • Disorientation.   In the event of a competitor becoming disorientated, then the safety bearing would be to head west until a major path, the disused railway line or the sea, and re-locate from there'.
  • Ticks.  Roseisle Forest has ticks so please check yourselves carefully after your run and remove them as soon as possible, and ideally within 48 hours.
  • First Aid.  A first aid kit will be available at registration, as and if required. The nearest hospital is Dr Gray’s in Elgin (20 mins drive away).

Ticks and Covid

Ticks

Risk Awareness:   Please be aware that ticks are common across many of the areas we run in and can carry infections such as Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis.  Ticks are active in the UK primarily from March to October, but year-round vigilance is recommended.

Prevention Strategies:

  • Wearing full leg and abdomen cover in the forest.
  • Applying insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.
  • Checking yourself for ticks after your run.  Common areas for ticks include behind the knees, underarms, hairline, and any pressure points.
  • Considering vaccination against TBE, if visiting high-risk areas in Europe or Asia.

Tick Removal and Symptoms:   Consider using a tick removal tool to ensure the tick is removed quickly and completely.   If a tick has attached, it should be removed as soon as possible.

Health Action:  If symptoms develop, such as a rash or flu-like symptoms, individuals should seek medical advice promptly and mention the tick bite, as not all doctors may be familiar with the conditions.

Key Resources:

  • Government Leaflet:  Linked here

  • International Orienteering Federation (IOF):   Provides information and fact sheets on TBE in collaboration with health partners orienteering.sport/tick-borne-encephalitis-tbe-dont-run-the-risk/.

  • NHS:  See nhs.uk for health advice on tick bites and associated conditions like Lyme disease.
