Event Summary

With thanks to Moray Council, please come to our festive fun event at Grant Park and Cluny Hill.  Michael has planned two score courses around the idea of Pool (Snooker).

There will be seven 'red' controls and seven 'yellow' controls.  Half of the competitors will get a map with the 'red' controls and half of the competitors will get a map with the 'yellow' controls.  Collect all the controls on your map (in any order as per a score event) before proceeding to the 'black' control to get a new map of the other colour. The short course will collect one colour and the long course will collect both colours.  The 'black' control will need to be visited (once for the short course and twice for the long course) before coming to the finish.

There will be a mass start at 12 pm and individual starts (for those that would prefer) at 1 mins/30 secs intervals thereafter, with last start around 12:15 pm.  Michael will be giving a full race briefing at 11:50 am, so please arrive in plenty of time not to miss it.

Please bring some Christmas offerings to share - mince pies/christmas cake rather than cold turkey!  Please note that there will be no entry on the day.

Please note that there will be a North District X-Country race starting at 10:30 am.  This will not affect the festive Pool-O event.

Ticks and Covid

Ticks

Risk Awareness:   Please be aware that ticks are common across many of the areas we run in and can carry infections such as Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis.  Ticks are active in the UK primarily from March to October, but year-round vigilance is recommended.

Prevention Strategies:

  • Wearing full leg and abdomen cover in the forest.
  • Applying insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.
  • Checking yourself for ticks after your run.  Common areas for ticks include behind the knees, underarms, hairline, and any pressure points.
  • Considering vaccination against TBE, if visiting high-risk areas in Europe or Asia.

Tick Removal and Symptoms:   Consider using a tick removal tool to ensure the tick is removed quickly and completely.   If a tick has attached, it should be removed as soon as possible.

Health Action:  If symptoms develop, such as a rash or flu-like symptoms, individuals should seek medical advice promptly and mention the tick bite, as not all doctors may be familiar with the conditions.

Key Resources:

  • Government Leaflet:  Linked here

  • International Orienteering Federation (IOF):   Provides information and fact sheets on TBE in collaboration with health partners orienteering.sport/tick-borne-encephalitis-tbe-dont-run-the-risk/.

  • NHS:  See nhs.uk for health advice on tick bites and associated conditions like Lyme disease.
